Social media engagement or Fan growth?<\/p>\n<p>The thing is, social media engagement and fan growth are\u00a0both important but in 2014 I noticed a trend of marketers dropping fan growth altogether to focus purely on engagement. Allocating zero ad spend towards acquisition activity became a badge of honour in the marketing community, suggesting the content was so good that it organically resulted in acquisition as a by-product of its creative brilliance. Of course there\u2019ll always be some level of organic acquisition but unless you\u2019re Old Spice or Red Bull, the scale just won\u2019t be there.<\/p>\n<h3>Why paid acquisition is important to build social media engagement<\/h3>\n<p>A key ingredient of effective Facebook marketing is having a mix of audiences you can target. For most marketers, your lowest Cost Per Engagement (CPE) on boosted posts should be to your fans. After all, these people have indicated an interest in your page and are much more likely to be receptive to your content versus people that aren\u2019t fans. However if your fan base isn\u2019t large, they may fatigue over time if you advertise to them frequently.<\/p>\n<p>There will likely be times when you\u2019ll want to reach a broad set of people beyond your fan base, say during a marketing campaign for a specific period of time. One of the most effective ways of doing this is targeting derivative fan audiences such as Friends of Fans and Lookalikes.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>As the name suggests, <strong>Friends of Fans<\/strong> are people who are friends of your fans. People tend to associate with others who share similar interests, lifestyles, beliefs or values. This is the case online as much as it is offline. Friends of Fans are a powerful way to leverage the \u201cnetwork effect\u201d of your existing fan base.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.socialstatus.io\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/007-fof2.png\"><img class=\"alignnone wp-image-659 size-full\" title=\"Audience settings in Facebook Ad Manager\" src=\"https:\/\/www.socialstatus.io\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/007-fof2.png\" alt=\"Facebook Friends of Fans audience targeting\" width=\"610\" height=\"357\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Lookalike audiences are people who share similar characteristics of your fans. When Facebook launched Lookalike audiences in 2013 there was much excitement about its potential. You can create a few different types of Lookalike audiences but Fan Lookalikes are a great way to turn a base of say 10,000 people into a new audience of 150,000.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.socialstatus.io\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/007-lookalike.png\"><img class=\"alignnone wp-image-660 size-full\" title=\"Create a Lookalike audience on Facebook\" src=\"https:\/\/www.socialstatus.io\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/007-lookalike.png\" alt=\"Facebook Lookalike Audiences\" width=\"653\" height=\"342\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Running paid acquisition activity refreshes and builds your fan base over time and by utilising these derivative fan audiences such as Friends of Fans and Fan Lookalikes you can exponentially reach more of your target users through your initial acquisition investment.<\/p>\n<p>You may be thinking to yourself, \u201cBut I can already reach a large amount of people if I target by demographic and interest\u201d. While it\u2019s true that you can reach 56,000 Australians who are aged between 18-49, female, in a relationship and like Italian cuisine; you will likely find these audiences to be broad and may subsequently struggle to be relevant to them with your posts. Because of this, you will expect to see a higher CPE on this broad targeting when boosting posts.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.socialstatus.io\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/007-fbad2-1.png\"><img class=\"alignnone wp-image-661 size-full\" title=\"Broad based demographic and interest targeting\" src=\"https:\/\/www.socialstatus.io\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/007-fbad2-1.png\" alt=\"Facebook demographic and interest targeting\" width=\"937\" height=\"525\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s where the Friends of Fans and Fan Lookalike audiences come in. By using these larger audiences you can then overlay the same demographic and interest targeting and reach much more relevant audiences which should deliver lower CPE than broad targeting.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.socialstatus.io\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/007-fbad2-2.png\"><img class=\"alignnone wp-image-662 size-full\" title=\"Overlay lookalikes with demographic and interest targeting\" src=\"https:\/\/www.socialstatus.io\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/007-fbad2-2.png\" alt=\"Facebook Lookalike, demographic and interest targeting\" width=\"937\" height=\"583\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h3>How to acquire new fans<\/h3>\n<p>Assign a monthly spend on Facebook advertising then think about the split between how much you\u2019ll allocate to boosting posts and how much you\u2019ll allocate to acquisition. If that split is currently 100\/0, I\u2019d encourage you to experiment with an 80\/20 split or even a 70\/30 split for a bit of a #yolo experience.<\/p>\n<p>First, set up a Page Like Ad:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.socialstatus.io\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/007-fbads-page-likes.png\"><img class=\"alignnone wp-image-663 size-full\" title=\"Promote your page\" src=\"https:\/\/www.socialstatus.io\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/007-fbads-page-likes.png\" alt=\"Facebook Page Like Ad\" width=\"964\" height=\"493\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Upload or choose up to 6x images in a landscape aspect ratio (1200px x 444px if possible) that visually bring to life your brand. Facebook will automatically run all ad variations to your chosen audience and serve more of the most successful variation:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.socialstatus.io\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/007-fbads-img.png\"><img class=\"alignnone wp-image-664 size-full\" title=\"Select the images to appear in your Page Like ad\" src=\"https:\/\/www.socialstatus.io\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/007-fbads-img.png\" alt=\"Facebook Page Like Ad\" width=\"964\" height=\"387\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Write a short line of copy that succinctly sums up the value to the user of liking your Facebook page.<\/p>\n<p>When it comes to targeting, make sure after you\u2019ve set up your Page Like Ad that you click the \u201cCreate Similar Advert\u201d button so you can run the same ad to a different audience. This will help you ascertain which audience is best for acquisition. You\u2019ll want to keep your eye on Cost per Page Like once your ad is live.<\/p>\n<h3>Action list<\/h3>\n<ol>\n<li>If you haven\u2019t already done so, go to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.facebook.com\/ads\/audience_manager\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Audiences<\/a> section of Facebook Adverts Manager and start creating some lookalike audiences from your existing fans<\/li>\n<li>Test post boosting to your fans, friends of fans and lookalike fans and assess CPE performance across the different audiences to build your social media engagement<\/li>\n<li>Test acquisition posts against friends of fans and lookalike fans to asses Cost per Page Like<\/li>\n<li>Finally, let us know on Twitter how much of your Facebook ad budget do you allocate to engagement and acquisition using the <strong>#socialstatus<\/strong> hashtag.
